Summer of Self
One day as dad lay in his hospital bed, I asked him, "If you could do it all over again, what would you choose as your career?". He responded by telling me that he would pursue music and do it full time. Dad instead became a Taxi driver due to family obligations; putting food on the table, paying the bills etc. I look back at those precious moments with him and the sacrifices he made and come to the realization that I don't want to be tethered to something I am not passionate about; that I don't want to go through life with Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda. Dad wasn't able to fully live out his passions in this lifetime but I want that vicious cycle to end with me.
I recently listened to a podcast from the founder of CurlBox, Myleik Tyrell who stated if she was given $1,000 to invest, she would invest in herself. Her answer opened my eyes to what has now become the Summer of Self.
I recently enrolled in several classes this summer because I'm tired of feeling so unfulfilled. I'm tired of waking up just to be present at a place that is fulfilling someone else's bottom line. So for whoever is reading this, my plea to you is to start something you've always wanted to do whether it be cooking classes, learning to ride a bike, painting, photography, yoga or anything in between. You never know what opportunities may arise after taking part in these self-enrichment activities.
For those who are interested, the classes I'm currently taking are:
- Adobe Premiere 101 and
Another important thing to help you level up in life is to network. There are many hidden opportunities that can be found in networking and it might serve as a great first step to getting closer to your goals and passions.
I'll be sure to give you updates on my current classes and possibly turn this into a series! Let me know if you would want that in the comment section and I'll check ya later.
